Hello world!

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Is this thing working?
Are my files persistent?
What the hell is nginx and why do I need it?
Why do I need to pay someone $5 for a SSL certificate that I can generate myself with the linux terminal and 45 seconds of my time?

I suppose this is as good a first post as any. Things sure have changed since my high school web development class. Back when men were men, we used html 4.01, nothing was web based, security was non-existent, we had Dreamweaver and nested tables, we had Flash, and we liked it!

But the times, they are a-changin’. I’ve already figured out a few things:
-Running Cat6 throughout the house.
-Welding up and mounting a custom 10U rack in the utility room.
-Running a dedicated 30A circuit with commercial grade UPS.
-Using PoE and a distributed, managed mesh of WAPs.
-Combining an old off the shelf NAS and a cheap motherboard combo to create a 3U server for the house running everything from DDNS, Minecraft server(s) for the kids and friends, hosting samba shares of 100% legally acquired media and other files, PiHole, etc.

I obviously can’t leave well enough alone. My sister says my brother in law and I are alike, in that we’re like Australian Shepherds. If you leave us alone we’ll get bored and start tearing the house apart. So in the interest of that, and the namesake of this site, I’ve decided to start documenting my trials and tribulations along this path. If for no other reason, to serve as a warning to other DIYers who think it’s ok to jump into things like this without a solid plan, or a friend to provide emergency relief when it all falls apart.

Next up: how to design a wordpress home page that doesn’t look like absolute garbage, to at least tide me over long enough to get started on other burning tasks.
